Climate of hope or doom and gloom? Testing the climate change hope vs. fear communications debate through online videos

Joshua Ettinger et al.

Summary: Research on evoking hope or fear regarding climate change and studying public responses to videos portraying hope and doom narratives found that participants experienced the respective emotions they were meant to elicit. Different levels of fear were reported based on political affiliations and climate change attitudes, while only participants across the Six Americas reported significantly different levels of hope. However, these emotional responses did not significantly impact climate change risk perceptions, behavior change likelihood, or climate activism likelihood. Open-ended survey responses indicate that ideological views may influence how individuals respond to specific video production elements such as music, editing, pacing, and visuals.

Overcoming polarization with chatbot news? Investigating the impact of news content containing opposing views on agreement and credibility

Brahim Zarouali et al.

Summary: Chatbots offer news media outlets an opportunity to engage with their audience in a conversational manner, potentially reducing polarization by making it easier for people to accept news articles with conflicting views. People are more likely to accept news delivered by a chatbot, finding it more credible, possibly due to the human-like characteristics they attribute to it. These results suggest a potential contribution to informed public discourse and a decrease in societal polarization.
