Does the Exchange Rate Respond to Monetary Policy in Mexico? Solving an Exchange Rate Puzzle in Emerging Markets

Pavel Solis

Summary: This paper argues that the lack or weak response of emerging market currencies to domestic monetary policy is due to wide event windows. An event study with intraday data for Mexico shows that an unanticipated tightening leads to currency appreciation and a flattened yield curve, consistent with evidence for advanced economies. However, with daily event windows, only the yield curve responds to monetary policy. The lack of currency response is explained by noise in daily exchange rate returns, which decreases after controlling for potential omitted variables.

Bond flows and liquidity: Do foreigners matter? q

Jens H. E. Christensen et al.

Summary: Investors seeking yield have turned to sovereign debt in emerging economies, raising concerns about financial stability risks. A study found that increasing foreign-held share of Mexican sovereign bonds has driven up their liquidity premiums. However, as long as the compensation for liquidity risk is adequate to mitigate the risk of a major foreign-led sell-off, it may not pose a material risk to Mexico's financial stability.

Measuring the effects of federal reserve forward guidance and asset purchases on financial markets

Eric T. Swanson

Summary: The study extended G?rkaynak et al.'s methods to separately identify unexpected changes in the federal funds rate, forward guidance, and large-scale asset purchases for each FOMC announcement from July 1991 to June 2019. The effects of forward guidance and LSAPs on various financial indicators were substantial, highly statistically significant, and comparable in magnitude to the effects of the federal funds rate in normal times, with the exception of the very large and perhaps special March 2009 LSAPs announcement.
