Incidence of retained biopsy specimens after esophagogastroduodenoscopy and colonoscopy

Summary: This study aimed to determine the incidence of specimen retention in the accessory channel or cap and identify associated procedure characteristics. Results showed that retained specimens were found in 48% of cases, with 19% found only in the cap, 5.7% found only in the channel, and 23% found in both. Retained specimens were more likely to be found in EGDs than colonoscopies (58% vs. 36%). This highlights the need for quality improvement measures to monitor and prevent the retention of biopsies during gastrointestinal endoscopy.
