Rejection sensitivity and romantic relationships: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Mandira Mishra et al.

Summary: This meta-analysis examined the relationship between rejection sensitivity and facets of romantic relationships. The results of 60 studies involving 16,955 participants showed that individuals with higher rejection sensitivity tend to have lower relationship satisfaction and closeness, lower perceived partner satisfaction, higher likelihood of intimate partner violence, more relationship concerns and conflict, and higher levels of jealousy and self-silencing behaviors. Additionally, they are more prone to risky sexual behavior and sexual compulsivity. Participant age and sex were found to moderate these effects. These findings have significant implications for the theoretical understanding of rejection sensitivity in romantic relationships and are relevant to relationship professionals.
