Transition Practices of Rural Pre-K and Kindergarten Teachers and Their Relations to Children's Academic and Social Skills

Kylie L. Garber et al.

Summary: This study examined the transition practices of pre-kindergarten and kindergarten teachers in rural Southeastern United States and their impact on children's skills at the beginning and end of kindergarten. Results showed that kindergarten teachers offered more transition practices than pre-k teachers, and the practices varied depending on the students they served. Data sharing on individual children was associated with higher literacy skills at entry to kindergarten. The study suggests that future policies should focus on practices such as data sharing to improve school readiness skills.
