The Role of Quality of Face-to-face Intergenerational Contact in Reducing Ageism: The Perspectives of Young People

Alice N. L. Kwong et al.

Summary: This study reveals that face-to-face intergenerational contact has a significant role in reducing ageism among young Chinese people. The quality of such contact is influenced by equal intergenerational status and frequent phone communication. Moreover, positive attitudes towards older people and phone communication also contribute to prosocial behavior towards them. The findings suggest the importance of strengthening positive intergenerational relationships within families and implementing equal intergenerational programs to combat ageism.

A scoping review of the green parenthood effect on environmental and climate engagement

Trisha R. Shrum et al.

Summary: This article reviews the existing literature on the role of parenthood as a motivator of environmental engagement, with a particular focus on climate change. Parenthood is found to be understudied as a mechanism influencing climate change-relevant behavior. The literature on the role of parenthood in driving environmental engagement is mixed, with some studies suggesting positive effects, while others finding no effects or negative effects. The article highlights the need to consider potential mediators and moderators to gain a clearer understanding of how parenthood influences pro-environmental engagement.

Perceived responsibility towards future generations and environmental concern: Convergent evidence across multiple outcomes in a large, nationally representative sample

Stylianos Syropoulos et al.

Summary: Research shows that a sense of responsibility towards future generations can increase intergenerational prosociality and combat intertemporal discounting, with a strong relationship to proenvironmental attitudes. Enhancing and leveraging perceptions of responsibility towards future others may be a powerful tool for promoting intergenerational environmental concern and action.

The contact hypothesis during the European refugee crisis: Relating quality and quantity of (in)direct intergroup contact to attitudes towards refugees

David De Coninck et al.

Summary: Research indicates that interethnic contact can reduce prejudice towards refugees, with the quality of direct contact being more important for attitude formation than frequency. Exposure to news on refugees and public news consumption are positively associated with attitudes, while commercial news consumption is negatively related to attitudes.
