The role of European and national identity and threat perceptions and in attitudes towards immigrants

Roy Konings et al.

Summary: Identification with Europe reduces prejudice towards immigrants, regardless of whether they are from inside or outside Europe. However, strong national identification leads to more negative attitudes towards immigrants, which can be explained by threat perceptions. European identifiers do not make strong distinctions between European and non-European immigrants. These findings provide mixed support for the Common In-group Identity Model.

Who is willing to help Ukrainian refugees and why? The role of individual prosocial dispositions and superordinate European identity

Emanuele Politi et al.

Summary: In 2022, Europe witnessed an unprecedented citizen mobilization to aid Ukrainian refugees. This study explores the relationship between individual prosocial dispositions, superordinate identities, and intentions to help Ukrainians. Results indicate that both dispositional prosociality and European identification are positively associated with the willingness to provide assistance for Ukrainians. Additionally, empathy and identity fusion mediate the relationship between prosocial dispositions/European identification and helping intentions. These findings highlight the importance of individual characteristics and group identities when considering intergroup helping behaviors.

The effect of perceived threat on human rights: A meta-analysis

Kevin R. Carriere et al.

Summary: Individuals tend to limit their own and others' rights when feeling threatened, even though they express support for civil liberties and human rights. This study found that perceived threats increase support for restrictions against outgroup members more than ingroup members, providing a possible punitive explanation for such support.

National and European Identity Formation: A Longitudinal Cross-National Comparison Study

Philipp Jugert et al.

Summary: This study examined social identity development in the national and European domains, finding four identity statuses - diffusion, moratorium, closure, and achievement - which differed in terms of civic engagement, nationalism, and views toward the EU. Stability of identity statuses varied across domains and countries, with higher congruence between national and European identities in Germany compared to Czech Republic.
