Modified assertive community treatment program for patients with schizophrenia: Effectiveness and perspectives of service consumers from a South Indian setting

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of modified assertive community treatment in promoting functional recovery in schizophrenia in a South Indian setting and to assess the perspectives of the patients and caregivers. The results showed significant improvements in overall functioning, medication adherence, relapse rates, and disability after enrollment into the program. The majority of the respondents had a positive attitude towards the program.

Summary: Day care centers for schizophrenia patients, aimed at helping them recover and find employment, are being established in India. The current study focuses on a psychiatry day care center in a public-private partnership model, which is the first of its kind in India. The challenges faced in running such a center and the need to tailor training programs to patients' profiles and cultural backgrounds are discussed. Common problems include poor placements, transportation issues, financial difficulties, and inadequate funding.

Income Generation Programs for Persons with Mental Health Challenges: Practices from 13 Indian Mental Health Rehabilitation Centers

Summary: In India, mental health rehabilitation centers run income generation programs (IGP) for therapeutic engagement, skills training, and income generation of clients. These centers have developed IGP models relevant to their settings. There is a lack of literature on the practices employed by these centers. This study compiled data from 13 centers, finding that most were based in south India and urban areas, with clients aged 20-60 participating in a variety of IGP projects. The selection of IGP was based on market demand, ease of operation, clients' interests and abilities, and resource availability. Marketing and sales were found to be challenging.

Employment in people with severe mental illnesses receiving public sector psychiatric services in India

Summary: The study found that in urban areas of India, 40% of individuals with severe mental illnesses who receive public psychiatric services are employed, mostly by independent employers, working an average of 53 hours per week. 92.2% of unemployed participants expressed a desire to work, with common barriers being psychological, mental illness-related, and work-related factors. The results highlight the need for vocational rehabilitation to improve the employment functioning of people with severe mental illnesses in India.
