Within the shadow of hierarchy: The role of hierarchical interventions in environmental collaborative governance

Summary: This paper highlights two areas that have been poorly examined in existing literature - the lack of empirical studies on the diverse impacts of hierarchical interventions on collaborative governance, and the limited deliberation on how existing horizontal relationships can moderate the effects of hierarchical interventions. By analyzing environmental collaboration data from the Yangtze River Delta region in China, the study finds that hierarchical interventions enhance the formalization of collaborative arrangements, and that horizontal relationships derived from past experiences can moderate these effects.

Latent network models to account for noisy, multiply reported social network data

Summary: Social network data often involve multiple individuals' reports, and it is challenging to reconcile conflicting responses. There are potential risks in multiply reported data if people's responses are influenced by the expectation of balanced, reciprocal relationships. We propose a probabilistic model that incorporates ties reported by multiple individuals and explicitly considers factors like over- or under-reporting tendencies and mutual relationships. Applying this model to real-world data, we find strong evidence of mutuality, which varies across relationship types. Our findings highlight the importance of addressing these issues in collecting, constructing, and analyzing survey-based network data.

Who Joins a Forum-And Who Does Not?-Evaluating Drivers of Forum Participation in Polycentric Governance Systems
