Economic policy uncertainty and household consumption: Evidence from Chinese households

Weixing Wu et al.

Summary: This study finds that households reduce their consumption in response to higher economic policy uncertainty (EPU). The high income group is more severely affected, which can be explained by their portfolio choice of illiquid and liquid assets. Older, wealthier, well-educated, and urban households are also more susceptible to the uncertainty effect. The impact of EPU on household consumption is persistent, but holding more liquid assets and commercial insurance can help mitigate its negative effect.

Economic policy uncertainty and corporate financialization: Evidence from China

Yan Zhao et al.

Summary: Using a quarterly sample of Chinese non-financial listed firms from 2007 to 2020, this study finds a U-shaped relationship between economic policy uncertainty (EPU) and corporate financialization. When economic policy uncertainty (EPU) is within an appropriate range, firms are unlikely to increase financial assets investment. Conversely, high economic policy uncertainty (EPU) induces operational risk and makes firms more willing to invest in financial assets. Furthermore, the effect is more pronounced for non-state-owned firms, firms with lower financing constraints, or firms located in less marketized regions.
