Service use and barriers to care among homeless veterans: Results from the National Veteran Homeless and Other Poverty Experiences (NV-HOPE) study

Summary: This study examined the services sought by low-income U.S. veterans when they experienced homelessness, the characteristics associated with service use, and the reasons for not using services. The findings showed that a quarter of low-income homeless veterans used homeless services, and about 27% used healthcare or benefits from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs during their homelessness. Black and Hispanic veterans were more likely to use both homeless services and VA services while homeless compared to veterans of other races/ethnicities. The most common barriers to services included veterans feeling they did not need help, lack of information about services, stigma and shame, and transportation barriers.

Financial Health and Psychiatric Symptoms Among Veterans With Psychosis or Recent Homelessness During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic had differential impacts on the physical health of vulnerable groups, and more research is needed on its effects on financial health and mental well-being. A study analyzed data from 158 participants, including veterans with a psychotic disorder, recently housed veterans, and a control group of veterans. Findings showed that financial health was related to mental health, and the pandemic did not have a significant impact on the financial health of the studied groups. Evaluation: 8/10.

Associations between mental health and job loss among middle- and low-income veterans and civilians during the COVID-19 pandemic: An exploratory study

Summary: This study found that job loss has different impacts on mental health among military veterans and civilians. Veterans are more likely to experience anxiety symptoms, while civilians are more affected by COVID-19 era-related stress and loneliness. These findings suggest the importance of increasing mental health services to address the ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Prevalence of eviction, home foreclosure, and homelessness among low-income US veterans: the National Veteran Homeless and Other Poverty Experiences study

Summary: This study examined the prevalence and characteristics of different events related to housing instability among low-income US veterans. The results showed that evictions, home foreclosures, and homelessness occur at relatively high rates among low-income veterans. Homelessness is more associated with biosocial dysfunction, while eviction is more closely associated with socio-economic vulnerability.

Summary: The current opioid epidemic in the United States has gone through three waves, now entering a fourth wave characterized as a stimulant/opioid epidemic with a greater presence of mental health co-morbidities. The use of stimulants has introduced new complexities in terms of behavioral consequences, available treatments, and engagement into services, compounding existing challenges in rural areas. Considerations for addressing this new wave are discussed, along with persistent concerns such as stigma in confronting drug abuse.
