The green gentrification cycle comment

Summary: Significant research has shown that gentrification often follows the implementation of greening initiatives, and that greening initiatives may be disproportionately located in disadvantaged neighborhoods. This critical commentary introduces the green gentrification cycle, which highlights the complex relationship between greening and gentrification. The cycle suggests that gentrification can precede, follow, or both precede and follow greening. The commentary also discusses the actors and processes involved in intentionally steering greening to already gentrifying communities and proposes three explanations for why gentrification often precedes greening.

Follow the money: Do gentrifying and at-risk neighborhoods attract more park spending?

Summary: Recent research has found that spending in urban green spaces, such as parks, has contributed to the development of new gentrified areas, also known as green gentrification. This study focused on the city of Los Angeles and investigated whether park investments, funded through developer fees between 2016 and 2018, were disproportionately allocated to neighborhoods undergoing gentrification or at risk of gentrification. The findings showed that park spending was concentrated in areas with ongoing gentrification, characteristics of potential gentrification, and higher educational attainment, while areas with higher proportions of Black and Asian residents received fewer park investments. The study emphasizes the importance of developing strategies to ensure that public investments funded by developer fees do not further exacerbate existing gentrification and displacement of marginalized communities.

Solving puzzles in the Canadian housing market: foreign ownership and de-coupling in Toronto and Vancouver

The analysis offers potential policy solutions to address housing affordability challenges and highlights widespread tax avoidance in certain urban areas. Additionally, it presents a methodology for researchers in other countries to infer the presence of de-coupling through foreign ownership when government-generated data is lacking.
