Dementia Caregiving Experiences and Health Across Geographic Contexts by Race and Ethnicity

Tiffany B. Kindratt et al.

Summary: This study examined the influence of geographic context and race/ethnicity on dementia caregiving. The results showed that both geographic context and race/ethnicity had different effects on caregiver experiences and health. Nonmetro caregivers were more likely to be racially/ethnically homogeneous and have more chronic conditions, and nonmetro context was associated with reduced caregiving and not co-residing with care recipients for racial/ethnic minority caregivers. Nonmetro minority dementia caregivers were more likely to report anxiety compared to metro minority dementia caregivers.

Rural-urban differences in diagnostic incidence and prevalence of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias

Momotazur Rahman et al.

Summary: Rural areas have higher risk-adjusted ADRD diagnostic incidence rates compared to metropolitan areas, despite lower prevalence rates. Metropolitan residents diagnosed with ADRD in 2008 had longer survival compared to rural and micropolitan residents, indicating potential underdiagnosis or late diagnosis in rural communities. Further research is needed to develop strategies to address this disparity.
