Skin in the Game: Operating Growth, Firm Performance, and Future Stock Returns

Sean Shun Cao et al.

Summary: Previous research suggests a negative relationship between asset growth and future firm performance. In contrast, our study shows that growth financed by product market stakeholders (operating growth) is positively associated with future firm performance. Investors and analysts underestimate the positive effects of operating growth on future performance, leading to return predictability and overly pessimistic earnings forecasts for firms with high operating growth.

Information Choice, Uncertainty, and Expected Returns

Charles Cao et al.

Summary: Our study investigates the impact of information choices on equity returns and risk, finding that stocks with a high learning index tend to have lower future returns and risk compared to those with a low learning index. By analyzing various factors such as conditional asset pricing models, long-term return patterns, and information flow measures, we provide empirical evidence supporting our interpretation of the learning index. Our findings not only validate the model's predictions but also introduce a novel empirical measure for investor learning.

Business groups and the incorporation of firm-specific shocks into stock prices

Mara Faccio et al.

Summary: Firm-specific information has a damped effect on business group-affiliated firms' stock prices. These firms' idiosyncratic stock returns are less responsive to idiosyncratic commodity price shocks than are the idiosyncratic returns of otherwise similar unaffiliated firms in the same country and commodity-sensitive industry.
