Effect of thermo-mechanical activation of waste concrete powder (WCP) on the characteristics of cement mixtures

Prabhat Vashistha et al.

Summary: The objective of this study is to investigate the reactivity and hydration behavior of thermo-mechanically activated waste concrete powder (WCP). Through the process of burning and mechanical grinding, the activated WCP demonstrates improved reactivity and hydration compared to ordinary Portland cement (OPC). Activated WCP can effectively enhance the reactivity of cement mixtures and develop comparable compressive strength to OPC. Additionally, replacing a portion of OPC with activated WCP can reduce CO2 emissions, mineral resources consumption, and energy consumption.

Electric vehicle charging infrastructure investment strategy analysis: State-owned versus private parking lots

Bing Qing Tan et al.

Summary: This paper analytically studies the optimal charging infrastructure investment decisions in parking lots with state-owned firms and private firms, which aims to alleviate range anxiety and facilitate the mass adoption of electric vehicles. An evolutionary game theoretic approach is proposed to explore the instability of investment decisions and derive the optimal investment strategies. The study finds that the investment ratio of state-owned firms and private firms is crucial to the evolutionary stable strategy.

Kai Kang et al.

Summary: Carbon emission reduction is crucial worldwide to combat global warming. Adopting cap-and-trade regulation as a market-based mechanism helps motivate firms to invest in decarbonization technologies for sustainable supply chains. This paper formulates an evolutionary game model to study the investment decisions of suppliers and manufacturers under cap-and-trade regulation and explores the impact of key parameters on reducing free-riding behaviors. The findings provide useful managerial implications for policymakers.

Life cycle assessment of recycled aggregate concrete on its environmental impacts: A critical review

Weiqi Xing et al.

Summary: Recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) is considered a sustainable solution for structural use. However, there are many inconsistencies and uncertainties in life cycle assessment (LCA) studies of RAC, hindering comparisons across studies. Cement production has the most significant environmental impact on concrete, followed by transportation. Mix design and LCA mechanisms influence the overall environmental performance of concrete. Subjective choices in selecting functional units, system boundaries, allocation rules, LCI, and LCIA methodologies in LCA phases result in more uncertainties.

Building demolition waste management through smart BIM: A case study in Hong Kong

Kai Kang et al.

Summary: The construction industry in Hong Kong generates a significant amount of waste each year, most of which is disposed of in landfills. While some waste management policies have been implemented, waste remains a concern and puts pressure on landfill capacity. This paper proposes a conceptual framework that utilizes Smart BIM, which collects and analyzes comprehensive information, to enhance waste management in building demolition. The framework utilizes advanced technologies such as IoT and supports waste assessment, demolition planning, disposal route selection, and waste management strategy execution. A case study shows the advantages of the framework in generating sustainable waste disposal practices and providing support to engineers and planners in the construction industry.

Wangwen Huo et al.

Summary: The dissolution of Si4+ and Al3+ from RWCP was highly affected by the alkaline content and dissolution time. Increasing alkali content, water glass content, and L/S ratio enhanced the UCS of geopolymers. The optimum NaOH concentration was 14 mol/L, WG/NH ratio was 1.5, and L/S mass ratio was 0.4. Wet curing at 70 degrees C for 24 hours resulted in a maximum 7-day UCS of 14.32 MPa.
