Can government environmental regulation promote low-carbon development in heavy polluting industries? Evidence from China?s new environmental protection law

Boqiang Lin et al.

Summary: To combat environmental pollution, China implemented the New China Environmental Protection Law in 2015. This study analyzes the impact of government environmental regulation on the carbon emissions intensity of heavy polluting industries using a quasi-natural experiment and a DID model. The results show that the implementation of the law significantly reduces industrial carbon emissions intensity.

The distributional effects of China'senvironmental taxation: A multi-regional analysis

Zhengjie Chen et al.

Summary: This paper constructs a multi-regional dynamic recursive computable general equilibrium (CGE) model to examine the distributional effects of China's environmental taxation. The results show that the environmental taxation widens the disparities between different income groups and regions, and higher tax rates exacerbate the adverse distributional effects. However, recycling tax revenues to both households and enterprises can reduce the losses for households, while recycling revenues to enterprises is more effective in narrowing the gap between income groups and regions and promoting regional economic development.

Impact of China's environmental protection tax on corporate performance: Empirical data from heavily polluting industries

Feng Long et al.

Summary: The study empirically investigates the impact of the environmental protection tax on corporate performance in heavily polluting industries in China. The findings suggest that the tax significantly reduces the short-term performance of these companies. However, it also has an innovation effect, leading to increased R&D investment and transformation. The study highlights the weak green effect of the tax and the differences in its impact based on regional institutional environment and firm size.

Does carbon pricing reduce emissions? A review of ex-post analyses

Jessica F. Green

Summary: Carbon pricing has been considered essential in climate policies, but studies show that its impact on emissions is limited, with most reductions falling between 0% and 2% per year. Carbon taxes are found to outperform emissions trading schemes, and the EU ETS has only achieved annual reductions ranging from 0% to 1.5%. The evidence suggests that carbon pricing has a limited impact on emissions reduction overall.

Can the current environmental tax rate promote green technology innovation? - Evidence from China's resource-based industries

Yan Wang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the optimal tax rate calculation for China's resource-based industries and evaluates the efficiency of green technology innovation. It finds that environmental externalities have a depressing effect on green technology innovation. Suggestions are made to gradually increase the environmental tax rate to achieve pollution reduction and technological innovation.

Do environmental taxes reduce air pollution? Evidence from fossil-fuel power plants in China

Panni Li et al.

Summary: The study found that environmental taxes have positive effects on pollutant reduction in fossil fuel power plants across 30 provinces in China, particularly for sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide, and dust. Additionally, in regions with high environmental regulation, the impact of environmental taxes is limited.
