Enhancing Democracy: Can Civic Engagement Foster Political Participation?

Summary: There is some evidence for Tocqueville's hypothesis in the United Kingdom during the sample period, but the effect is sensitive to model specification and issues of reverse causation. Organizational activity positively impacts political participation, but the effects are smaller than usual and depend on types of associations and degree of activity. Sensitivity analyses suggest that political interest is a stronger predictor of political party support than associational activities.
