Country risks, government subsidies, and Chinese renewable energy firm performance: New evidence from a quantile regression

Wenwen Zhang et al.

Summary: Using an unbalanced panel of Chinese listed renewable energy firms, this study examines the impact of country risks and government subsidies on the performance of renewable energy firms with different performance levels. The results show that different types of country risks have varying effects on the performance of renewable energy firms. Government subsidies have a positive (negative) effect on the performance of lower-performing (higher-performing) firms. The moderating effects of government subsidies on the relationship between country risks and firm performance change with performance levels and ownership attributes.

Do green finance and innovation matter for environmental protection? A case of OECD economies

Muhammad Umar et al.

Summary: As climate change poses an increasingly urgent threat, the importance of green innovation and finance in achieving sustainable development and reducing environmental pollution has been emphasized. However, previous research studies have overlooked the impact of green finance initiatives and innovations on trade-adjusted CO2 emissions. Therefore, this study fills this research gap by examining the effect of green finance, green innovation, environmental policy stringency, international trade, and economic growth on carbon emissions in OECD countries. The findings highlight the significant role of green finance and innovation in reducing carbon emissions and emphasize the need for policymakers and regulators to prioritize these factors in order to achieve sustainable environmental goals.

Green trade or green technology? The way forward for G-7 economies to achieve COP 26 targets while making competing policy choices

Jiancheng Bai et al.

Summary: Pursuing Green Trade, which involves environmental restrictions, has been a popular policy choice for wealthy and trade-integrated countries. However, the effectiveness of such regulations in improving environmental quality has been a less investigated area. In this study, using a rigorous econometric approach, we analyze the environmental effects of two competing policy choices, namely imposing environmental restrictions on Trade or investing in green technology and innovation for G-7 countries. Our findings are exciting and contrary to mainstream ideas. We find that increasing the share of Green trade in G-7 countries' overall trade portfolio has no environmental benefits and actually leads to increased consumption-based carbon emissions. On the other hand, investing in Green technology has a significant positive impact in reducing these emissions in the panel of G-7 countries. These results underline the importance of the two competing policy choices that every country must consider to protect the climate and prevent further environmental degradation.

Financial market development: A potentiating policy choice for the green transition in G7 economies

Bushra Naqvi et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the effects of green energy, green industry, and green trade on the environment throughout the green transition in G7 economies. It also examines the moderating role of financial development in achieving the COP-26 targets. The findings suggest that transitioning towards green energy and green industry improves environmental quality, while green trade does not have a significant positive impact. However, financial development can mitigate some adverse effects and contribute to carbon emission reduction.

Cooperative equilibrium of the China-US-EU climate game

Judy Da Zhu

Summary: The EU has been leading climate action consistently, while the US has been fluctuating and China has shifted from passive to proactive in the past decade. Analyzing their strategies using game theory, our model shows that the Nash equilibria in environmental policy differ from the prevalent Prisoner's Dilemma, with collective cooperation as the only equilibrium in the 2010s and beyond. This model explains historic behaviors and predicts future directions for these three actors.

Short- and long-term effects of responsible investment growth on equity returns

Yann Ferrat et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of responsible investment growth on future stock returns using non-financial ratings data of US and European companies from 2007 to 2019. The findings suggest that in the short term, sustainability-leading and lagging firms have similar stock returns, but the spread becomes negative over long horizons and increases over time. The results highlight the significant effect of responsible investment growth on future stock returns, supporting the price pressure hypothesis in the short run and the cost of capital alteration over longer horizons.
