The recent decline in period fertility in England and Wales: Differences associated with family background and intergenerational educational mobility

John Ermisch

Summary: During the period 2010-20, the fertility rate in England and Wales reached its lowest point ever recorded. This study aims to enhance our understanding of the decline in period fertility by examining two dimensions: the influence of a woman's parents' education (family background) and the impact of a woman's own education in relation to her parents' education (intergenerational educational mobility). The analysis reveals a significant decrease in fertility rates across all education groups, whether defined by the education of the woman's parents or by the woman's own education relative to that of her parents. Considering both parents' and women's education together allows for a better differentiation of fertility trends compared to analyzing each generation's education separately. The study also shows a narrowing of Total Fertility Rate disparities over the decade, although timing differences still persist.

Graphical Models for Processing Missing Data

Karthika Mohan et al.

Summary: This article reviews recent advances in missing data research using graphical models, addressing the limitations of traditional frameworks and providing meaningful performance guarantees, even in cases of missing data not at random. The study identifies conditions for consistent estimation and procedures for implementation, as well as deriving testable implications for missing data models.
