Role of Triarchic Traits in Relations of Early Resting Heart Rate With Antisocial Behavior and Broad Psychopathology Dimensions in Later Life

Bridget M. Bertoldi et al.

Summary: Low resting heart rate is associated with the development of antisocial behavior and other clinical problems. Stimulation seeking and fearlessness may explain this association, and disinhibition and boldness play a role in the relationship between early heart rate and later clinical outcomes.

Understanding Aggression in Adolescence by Studying the Neurobiological Stress System: A Systematic Review

Neeltje E. Blankenstein et al.

Summary: Adolescent aggression serves as an important precursor to antisocial development. Research on the stress response systems, specifically the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and autonomic nervous system (ANS), has contributed significantly to our understanding of aggression development. However, there is a lack of recent comprehensive overview on the bio-behavioral associations. This study synthesized and analyzed literature since 2011, focusing on HPA-axis (cortisol) and ANS (heart rate and skin conductance) measures during rest and stress, in relation to aggression in adolescence (11-19 years). The findings suggest that while lower basal cortisol and resting heart rate consistently relate to higher levels of aggression, the results regarding HPA-axis and ANS reactivity are mixed. Tentative evidence also indicates that lowered arousal is associated with proactive forms of aggression, while higher arousal is associated with reactive forms. Psychological and social factors, such as social adversity, internalizing problems, and empathy, influence the association between neurobiological measures and aggression. The study recommends future research to consider different types of aggression using multiple measurement instruments, multiple reactivity tasks, and a psychosocial assessment, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive biopsychosocial approach to understanding adolescent aggression.

Reconsidering the role of sex hormones in psychopathy development: Estrogen and psychopathy among male justice-involved youth

Natalie A. Harrison et al.

Summary: This study found relationships between interacting HPA and HPG axis hormones with psychopathic traits, especially that psychopathy scores were more likely with decreases in hormone reactivity following a stressor. These findings support the inclusion of estradiol in neurobiological models of psychopathy and the consideration of individual components of psychopathy.

Salivary cortisol patterns in psychopathic and non-psychopathic offenders

M. Cima et al.

Summary: This study explored morning cortisol levels and stress responses in psychopathic offenders, non-psychopathic offenders, and non-offender controls. The researchers found that psychopathic offenders exhibited significantly lower cortisol levels during a stress task compared to controls, while non-psychopathic offenders showed a similar but non-significant trend. However, there were no significant differences in cortisol response slopes among the three groups.

Revision: Externalizing behavior in healthy young adults is associated with lower cortisol responses to acute stress and altered neural activation in the dorsal striatum

Julian Konzok et al.

Summary: Individuals with high externalization in the general population have reduced cortisol stress responses and show differences in neural activation, primarily in the dorsal striatum. Gender also plays a modulating role in these responses.

Examining the Role of Ethnic Microaggressions and Ethnicity on Cortisol Responses to an Acute Stressor Among Young Adults

Angelina Majeno et al.

Summary: The study found that experiencing a higher frequency of ethnic microaggressions and being more sensitive to such experiences were associated with a more blunted cortisol response to an acute social stressor. This blunted response was more prominent among young adults of Latinx and other ethnic backgrounds compared to their Asian American and non-Hispanic White peers.
