Alternative ways of studying time in qualitative international business research: A review and future agenda

Ziad Elsahn et al.

Summary: Our study systematically reviews 304 qualitative-based articles published in seven international business journals from 2010 to 2020. We propose a typology that offers alternative approaches to studying time, based on ontological conceptions of time (objective vs subjective) and theorising style of research (variance vs process). Our analysis reveals that time is predominantly perceived as objective and linear, and uncovers certain concerns such as lack of conceptual clarity, limited diversity within and across paradigms, and methodological ambiguity. We suggest three pathways for further advancing research on time.
