Developing modified congestion index and congestion-based level of service

Ninad Gore et al.

Summary: This study developed a new measure called modified congestion index (MCI) by integrating traffic flow and travel time-based congestion measures to identify prevailing congestion levels. Using empirical and simulated data, the MCI was derived through a generalized least square framework (GLS). The results showed that traffic states bifurcated based on MCI followed the general principles of macroscopic fundamental diagram (MFD) and fundamental diagram (FD). MCI was able to simultaneously characterize reliability and congestion, and LOS thresholds based on MCI were developed for the application of traffic signal control and congestion mitigation strategies.

Traffic congestion and travel time prediction based on historical congestion maps and identification of consensual days

Nicolas Chiabaut et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a new method for real-time estimation of traffic conditions and travel times on highways by utilizing principal component analysis and clustering of historical dataset. The clustering results show similarity in traffic conditions and dynamics of days in the same group, and a consensual day is identified as the most representative day of each cluster. This method uses past observations to predict future traffic conditions and travel times based on the closest consensual day to a new day, showing promising results on a French freeway dataset.

Examining deterministic and probabilistic capacity estimation methods under mixed traffic using empirical data

Ritvik Chauhan et al.

Summary: This research investigates the applicability of different roadway capacity estimation methods under weak-lane discipline and explores the advantages of stochastic capacity estimation methods for urban roads in India. It identifies the Van-Aerde model as the best representative for estimating deterministic roadway capacity, observes the PLM method providing freedom in selecting operational quality, and notes the SFI method offering maximum sustained flow for roadway infrastructure. As a practical outcome, a novel Level of Service monitoring framework is developed by combining the traditional volume-to-capacity ratio with breakdown probabilities.

Identification and characterizing of the prevailing paths on a urban network for MFD-based applications

S. F. A. Batista et al.

Summary: This study introduces a methodological framework incorporating two different methods to determine the most prevailing paths chosen by drivers in urban networks. The research demonstrates that this framework is effective in accurately identifying the most common paths, and highlights that the paths chosen by drivers are not necessarily the ones with the shortest average travel distances.
