Design of Battery Electric Bus System Considering Waiting Time Limitations

Pranav Gairola et al.

Summary: This study developed an optimization model for battery electric bus (BEB) systems, considering varying energy demand scenarios and waiting time limitations. The model determined the effects of waiting time limitations on BEB battery sizes and charger design variables while minimizing the total cost of the system. The results show that considering waiting time limitations can affect the design of BEB systems and help bus operators comply with service level agreements.

Is unsubsidised energy transition possible? Feasibility of replacing diesel buses with electric ones

Javier Arizcuren-Blasco et al.

Summary: This study assesses the economic viability of replacing diesel vehicles with electric ones in the public transport sector of mid-sized European cities. It proposes a methodology to improve public sector decision-making by analyzing the acquisition and operating costs of electric buses, accounting for both internal costs and externalities. The results show that investment in electric buses is not profitable without public subsidies, highlighting the importance of this type of analysis in the decision-making process for sustainable urban mobility development.

Multistage planning of electric transit charging facilities under build-operate-transfer model

Meng Li et al.

Summary: Careful planning of charging facilities is crucial for the successful functioning of electric transit systems. Transit agencies can cooperate with professional charging service providers through a build-operate-transfer (BOT) model. This research applied a mixed-integer program model to a real-world transit system in a Chinese metropolis and derived meaningful managerial insights.

Life Cycle Assessment of Battery Electric and Internal Combustion Engine Vehicles Considering the Impact of Electricity Generation Mix: A Case Study in China

Bowen Tang et al.

Summary: This paper examines the impact of electricity generation mix on carbon emissions from vehicles by comparing the life cycle carbon emissions of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) with Internal Combustion Engine Vehicles (ICEVs) in China. The study reveals that BEVs in regions with a high penetration of thermal power produce more CO2 emissions, while BEVs in regions with a higher penetration of renewable energy have better environmental performance in carbon emission reduction.

Cost-effectiveness analysis of compressed natural gas implementation in the public bus transit fleet in Delhi, India

Christian Krelling et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the emissions impacts and cost-effectiveness of CNG and diesel buses in Delhi and the Indian context. The results show that CNG buses significantly reduce emissions in the early 2000s, but may not have better cost-effectiveness ratios compared to cleaner diesel buses. However, in the period of 2010-2015, the emission reductions and cost-effectiveness of CNG buses were worse. Allowing only CNG buses to operate in Delhi in the early 2000s was an effective policy choice for mitigating local air pollution.

Analysing the implications of electrification of public transport buses in Pune city, India

Suvedh Jaywant et al.

Summary: The urban road transport sector in India is facing challenges such as increased travel demand, private vehicle use, traffic congestion, and air pollution. Electric buses are seen as a potential solution to address these issues. However, their financial viability and emission reduction effects need to be carefully analyzed. Research indicates that while electric buses may not be financially viable at present, careful planning and phased implementation can make them a promising option for the future.
