Building productivism in rural China: The case of residential restructuring in Chengdu

Analyzing space-time evolution of rural transition in a rapidly urbanizing region: A case study of Suzhou, China

Summary: Influenced by globalization, rural transition in developed Western countries has gone through processes of productivism, post-productivism, and multifunctional development. In contrast, rural transition in most developing countries is accompanied by rapid urbanization, which has become a central research topic in geography. As China, the world's largest developing country, has undergone significant development since the reform and opening-up. This study focuses on Suzhou and measures the process of rural transition from 1990 to 2015 by constructing an index system. Using exploratory spatial data analysis methods, the paper analyzes the characteristics of space-time evolution to reveal the influence of economic and social development on rural transition. The results indicate that while rural transition generally involves the weakening of rurality and the strengthening of urbanity on a macro scale, it tends to be heterogeneous across different regions on a micro scale. The paper argues that multifunctionality will be the main future trend of rural transition in rapidly urbanizing areas. The experience in Suzhou could serve as an example for formulating policies on sustainable development in rural spaces and achieving urban-rural co-governance.

Summary: In recent years, the back-to-the-land migration has become an emerging phenomenon in developing countries, with more and more people going to the countryside to practice peasant-like agriculture. This research aims to understand the re(construction) of new farmer identity through interactions with organic farming, and how this identity is shaped and contested in maintaining and reinforcing interactions. The study argues that the shifting meanings of farmer and farming in this new agricultural movement show the emergence of a post-productivist agricultural regime in China.
