Are they willing to switch from non-driving to driving? An exploratory study among Chinese older people

Long Chen et al.

Summary: The aging problem in China is becoming increasingly severe, with improving mobility and promoting healthy aging as critical challenges. A study using the Push-Pull-Mooring framework explored the perspectives of older people in China on switching to driving following the policy adjustment on the driving test. The results showed the impact of various factors on the intentions to switch, as well as differences in driving preferences based on health conditions and individual and household attributes.

The detection of vulnerable road users by younger and older drivers

Maud Ranchet et al.

Summary: The study found that aging negatively affects the detection ability of vulnerable road users, even in the younger-old group. Older-old adults had poorer detection abilities for VRUs, especially when the VRU was a motorcyclist or a cyclist. Older-old adults required more fixations and visual exploration to correctly detect VRUs.

Characteristics of driving self-assessments and factors related to inaccurate self-assessment in Japanese older adults

Ritsu Kosuge et al.

Summary: Older drivers tend to overestimate their driving performance, especially in terms of speed and scanning. Drivers rated poorly by experts showed greater discrepancies between self-assessments and expert assessments, and were more likely to drive faster at certain intersections.

How do older drivers perceive visual information under increasing cognitive load? Significance of personality on-road safety

Marcin Piotr Biernacki et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of personality traits on oculomotor activity in older drivers under increasing cognitive load. Results showed that drivers with higher levels of neuroticism and extraversion had longer saccade and fixation times during tasks, and visual attention shifting in older drivers decreased with task difficulty.

The Effects of Distraction Type and Difficulty on Older Drivers' Performance and Behaviour: Visual vs. Cognitive

Joonwoo Son et al.

Summary: The study found that older drivers showed significant differences in performance when engaging in visual and auditory secondary tasks, with more difficult tasks creating greater age disparities. However, eye movements and physiological responses did not show significant differences between younger and older drivers, suggesting a potential lower risk awareness of cognitive distractions in older drivers.

A systematic review and meta-analysis of older driver interventions

Bernadette A. Fausto et al.

Summary: The study found that driving interventions targeting older adults can improve on-road driving performance and reduce at-fault crashes. Physical retraining/exercise, visual perceptual training, and combined intervention approaches showed significant improvements, while cognitive training, education, and context-specific training did not show significant effects on driving safety outcomes.
