Structural Health Monitoring Using a New Type of Distributed Fiber Optic Smart Textiles in Combination with Optical Frequency Domain Reflectometry (OFDR): Taking a Pedestrian Bridge as Case Study

Sabrina Abedin et al.

Summary: This paper aims to address the fragility and complexity of distributed fiber optic sensors (DFOS) by embedding them into textiles for easier installation. A smart textile was installed on a pedestrian bridge at the University of Massachusetts Lowell to demonstrate the feasibility of this approach. The collected dynamic strain data from two different years showed no significant change in response pattern, with differences in amplitude of 14% (one person jumping) and 43% (two people jumping) in the first frequency band.

Transient Strain Monitoring of Weldments Using Distributed Fiber Optic System

David Mackey et al.

Summary: The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the capability of a distributed fiber optic sensor to capture dynamic transient strain formation during and post-weldment on a steel plate. The study involved a manual weld on a 300 mm x 300 mm x 6.35 mm A36 steel plate, using a fiber optic distributed sensor to measure surface strains. Experimental results showed complex behavior of strain changes during welding and residual strain formation post-welding. This study documents the use of distributed fiber optic sensing techniques in welding applications.

Integration of an optical FBG sensor into a nuclear magnetic resonance core flooding system

Lionel Esteban et al.

Summary: A new platen was designed and developed to integrate fibre Bragg grating (FBG) strain sensors into a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) core flooding cell. This integration allows for simultaneous monitoring of fluid dynamics behavior and deformation/elastic properties during NMR core flooding experiments. The ability to evaluate the impact of rock-fluid interactions during NMR core flooding has been limited in the past, but the FBG sensing technique offers a solution by providing localized strain measurements. The integration of FBG sensors into the NMR core flooding system adds a new capability to monitor material deformation during pressure/temperature alterations.

Distributed fibre optic sensors in FRP composite bridge monitoring: Validation through proof load tests

Tomasz Siwowski et al.

Summary: The DFOS technique based on Rayleigh scattering was chosen for the first Polish FRP composite bridge as the basic SHM system, and its validation through proof load tests and FEA showed that it is accurate and reliable for monitoring FRP bridges. Additional strain measurement techniques were implemented to validate DFOS, and the comparison of measurement profiles with FEA results also supported the reliability and accuracy of the DFOS technique for FRP bridge monitoring.

Rock Triaxial Tests: Global Deformation vs Local Strain Measurements-Implications

A. Perbawa et al.

Summary: This study focuses on compliance at specimen-endcap interfaces and variations in triaxial conditions using different instrumentation protocols. The results show that surface roughness at these interfaces affects measurement accuracy, while cap-to-cap deformation measurements accentuate hysteretic behavior and affect the estimation of rock parameters.
