Differential bacterial ammonia oxidation patterns in soil particles from two contrasting forests: The importance of interfacial interactions

Xiaohu Wang et al.

Summary: Soil inorganic nitrogen deficiency restricts forest productivity in subalpine regions. The diversity and abundance of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria greatly affect soil inorganic nitrogen availability in subalpine coniferous forests. The interfacial interactions between bacteria and soil particles have been found to influence the ammonia oxidation process.

Characterization Methods of Ions and Metals in Particulate Matter Pollutants on PM2.5 and PM10 Samples from Several Emission Sources

Mauricio A. Correa et al.

Summary: This research investigated the current methods of characterization of ions and metals in particulate matter pollutants from different emission sources. The Proknow-C methodology was used, with a selection of scientific and review articles. The study examined various methodologies used to quantify ions and metals in PM, focusing on PM10 and PM2.5. The research explored the types of filters, equipment, and characterization techniques. Results showed that Proknow-C is a reliable method for analyzing PM pollution research, providing insight into metals and ions types, characterization technologies, current situations, and trends. Sulfate, nitrate, and ammonium ions accounted for 70-80% of the PM concentrations. Main metals detected included chromium, nickel, lead, cadmium, iron, manganese, coper, and zinc. The predominant detection method was inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Geographic information systems were identified as a valuable tool for integrating spatial data with PM and air pollution analysis, aiding in faster diagnosis and solution implementation.

Real-time detection of ammonium in soil pore water

Rotem Yupiter et al.

Summary: This work investigates an approach for real-time measurement of ammonium in soil water using near-infrared transmission spectroscopy and partial least squares regression (PLSR) for spectral analysis. The results demonstrated capabilities for real-time tracking of the temporal variation in soil ammonium concentration and potential utilization in agronomical or environmental sensing.

Origins of groundwater nitrate in a typical alluvial-pluvial plain of North China plain: New insights from groundwater age-dating and isotopic fingerprinting

Ying Zhang et al.

Summary: Identifying nitrate sources and their temporal evolution is crucial for sustainable groundwater management. This study used groundwater dating, chemical and stable isotope analyses to understand nitrate sources and contamination mechanisms. The findings provide valuable insights for managing nitrate pollution in regions undergoing rapid urbanization and agricultural intensification.

Electromass Transfer in the System Cation Exchange Membrane-Ammonium Nitrate Solution

Olga Kozaderova et al.

Summary: This paper describes an experimental study and mathematical simulation of the electromembrane transfer of weak electrolyte cations (specifically ammonium ions), hindered by hydrolysis reactions in the surface layers of the cation exchange membrane. By using the finite element method, a solution was found for the diffusion-kinetic electrodialysis problem in potentiostatic mode. Based on experimental data and theoretical simulation results, the effect of hydrolysis on concentration polarization in the electromembrane system and the transport characteristics of ions were analyzed, and a mechanism for the transfer of components in the ammonium nitrate solution through the cation exchange membrane was suggested.

Pathways and efficiency of nitrogen attenuation in wastewater effluent through soil aquifer treatment

Alex Abu et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the treatment effectiveness of Soil Aquifer Treatment (SAT) systems for nitrogen compounds using chemical and isotopic tools. The results show that coupled nitrification-denitrification is the main mechanism responsible for nitrogen migration and distribution. The study also reveals that the addition of a permeable reactive barrier can enhance the removal of nitrogen compounds in the SAT system.

Organic compounds in surface and groundwaters in the surrounding of a Mexican geothermal reservoir; case study Los Humeros, Puebla

Brenda Estela Garcia-Sanchez et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the migration of organic compounds (OC's) from the Los Humeros Geothermal Field (LHGF) to the surrounding surface and groundwaters. Through analysis of different water samples, various OC's were identified, suggesting the migration of certain compound families from LHGF to the surrounding water bodies, with a possible anthropogenic influence. Additionally, a strong anthropogenic influence on the sampling zone waters was found, indicating potential environmental impact.

Early and differential bacterial colonization on microplastics deployed into the effluents of wastewater treatment plants

Sergio Martinez-Campos et al.

Summary: This study investigated the bacterial communities and abundance of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) on different types of microplastics (MPs) in wastewater treatment plant effluents. The results showed higher bacterial diversity on MPs compared to free-living bacteria in effluents, with different polymer types attracting specific bacteria for early attachment. Moreover, MPs concentrated antibiotic-resistant bacteria carrying certain ARGs, highlighting the role of early attachment phase in bacterial biofilm development on MP polymers.
