Nuclear radiation shielding performance of borosilicate glasses: Numerical simulations and theoretical analyses

O. Kilicoglu et al.

Summary: The photon shielding performances of five different borosilicate-based glasses were investigated in this study. The photon attenuation features were evaluated with Monte Carlo simulation and theoretical evaluation tools, and the results showed that the addition of high-Z elements such as Ba in suitable amounts can improve the photon attenuation capability of the glasses. The gamma shielding characteristics of the analyzed samples were found to be associated with the density of the glass.

Influence of iron (III) oxide on the optical, mechanical, physical, and radiation shielding properties of sodium-barium-vanadate glass system

Taner Kavas et al.

Summary: This study investigated the physical, optical, mechanical, and radiation absorption features of a Sodium-bariumvanadate glass system containing iron (III) oxide through direct calculations and Monte Carlo simulations. The results showed that the chemical composition and density of the glass influenced its optical and mechanical properties, and increasing the Fe2O3 content improved the glass's radiation absorption capacity.

Optical Properties and Gamma Radiation Shielding Capability of Transparent Barium Borosilicate Glass Composite

Mohamed Ehab et al.

Summary: This study investigates the radiation shielding capability and optical properties of a SiO2-ZnO-Na2CO3-H3BO3-BaCO3 glass composite with varying concentrations of barium carbonate. Experimental and theoretical analysis shows that as the concentration of BaCO3 increases, parameters such as mass density, refractive index, and dielectric constant also increase. However, the optical bandgap decreases with increasing barium concentration. The results also demonstrate that the mass attenuation coefficients increase with BaCO3 concentration. The study suggests that the prepared glass composite could be suitable for transparent shielding applications.
