Muneer Shaik et al.

Summary: This study uses wavelet power spectrum and wavelet coherence transformation methodologies to examine how geopolitical risk affected the returns on stocks, oil, and gold during the GFC, COVID-19, and Russia-Ukraine war. The findings show that geopolitical risk during the Russia-Ukraine war had higher variations compared to the COVID-19 period, and the least variation during the GFC period. Stocks and oil prices had high variations in both frequency and time domains during the GFC and COVID-19 periods. The study also found that gold offers better diversification opportunity and acts as a leading indicator against oil and stock indexes during disruptive events in financial markets.

Dynamic connectedness, spillover, and optimal hedging strategy among FinTech, Sukuk, and Islamic equity markets

Mustafa Raza Rabbani et al.

Summary: This paper examines the dynamic connectedness, spillover, and optimal hedging strategy of FinTech, Sukuk, and Islamic equity markets. The findings indicate that FinTech markets are primarily intra-connected in the short and medium term but significantly interconnected in the long term. Volatility transmission dominates in the short term, with increased intensity during the Russian-Ukrainian War and the COVID-19 pandemic. There is higher information transmission from Islamic equity indices compared to Sukuk and FinTech indices. The dynamic portfolio weights for MCP and MCoP are similar but differ from the MVP approach. The paper concludes that FinTech indices have a notable role in fixed-income Islamic investment portfolios, with the benefits of diversification fluctuating over time.

The US equity sectors, implied volatilities, and COVID-19: What does the spillover analysis reveal?

Wasim Ahmad et al.

Summary: This study explores the spillover effects of the implied volatilities of oil, gold, and the stock market on US equity sectors. The findings indicate that the market's expectation of oil price volatility has a weaker spillover effect on sectoral returns compared to the market's expectation of US stock market volatility, which dominates the spillover role. Additionally, the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has strengthened the spillovers of US equity sectors on VIX and OVX.
