Hometown attachment or urban dependence? The reciprocal effects between multi-dimensional relative poverty of migrant workers and urban-rural land dependence

Fangzhou Xia et al.

Summary: China has successfully reduced absolute poverty and will continue to address relative poverty through governance. This study focuses on the governance of relative poverty among migrant workers in China, analyzing the reciprocal influence mechanism between urban-rural land dependence and relative poverty, and constructing an econometric model to examine the relationship. Findings indicate that the incidence of relative poverty based on high-level needs remains high and requires attention from policymakers. The level of rural land dependence is higher than urban land dependence, and there is heterogeneity in urban-rural land dependence among different types of migrant workers. There is a positive reciprocal effect between rural land dependence and relative poverty, demonstrating a cycle where stronger village attachment leads to higher poverty, and higher poverty strengthens village attachment. Relative poverty has a reciprocal effect on urban land dependence, but the cyclic mechanism of higher urban attachment leading to greater wealth does not exist, possibly due to the stronger consumption crowding-out effect caused by improving urban housing. This study provides insights for optimizing land factor allocation among migrant workers and promoting the eradication of relative poverty.

Predicting sustainable arsenic mitigation using machine learning techniques

Sushant K. Singh et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the performance of different machine learning models in predicting preferences for sustainable arsenic mitigation. The results show that a Gaussian distribution-based Naive Bayes classifier performs the best, while linear classifiers underperform. Nonlinear or ensemble classifiers can better understand the complex relationships in socio-environmental data and provide accurate and robust prediction models. In cases of limited data, Gaussian Naive Bayes is the best option.

Mitigating the Multicollinearity Problem and Its Machine Learning Approach: A Review

Jireh Yi-Le Chan et al.

Summary: Technological advancements have facilitated the collection of big data in various fields, leading to an increase in variables and data points. However, this also introduces the problem of multicollinearity, which can be mitigated through variable selection methods and modified estimator methods. Recent studies suggest that optimization approaches using machine learning may handle multicollinearity better than traditional statistical estimators.

Gender-Differentiated Poverty among Migrant Workers: Aggregation and Decomposition Analysis of the Chinese Case for the Years 2012-2018

Jiquan Peng et al.

Summary: The relative poverty statuses of female and male migrant workers are complex, influenced by gender differences and discrimination. This study shows that despite facing gender discrimination, female migrant workers are generally better off than male migrant workers due to their slight characteristic-led advantages and autonomous poverty reduction activities. This study contributes to a theoretical understanding of gender differences in migrant workers' relative poverty.

The influence of contextual and household factors on multidimensional poverty in rural Vietnam: A multilevel regression analysis

Tuyen Quang Tran et al.

Summary: This study utilizes multilevel regression modeling technique to investigate the impact of contextual and household factors on multidimensional poverty in rural Vietnam. It finds that unobservable characteristics at different administrative levels contribute significantly to the variation in poverty risk. Micro-factors such as ethnicity, education, social capital, nonfarm activities, and public employment are crucial in reducing poverty likelihood and deprivation. Additionally, living in provinces with higher economic development, population density and international integration increases households' chances of escaping poverty.

Targeted poverty alleviation and its practices in rural China: A case study of Fuping county, Hebei Province

Yuanzhi Guo et al.

Summary: After nearly seventy years of poverty alleviation, China has basically solved the problem of providing food and clothing to the rural poor. However, the islanding effect of the distribution of the poor and the marginal diminishing effect of the antipoverty resources restrict the effects of poverty-eliminating strategies. In response, the Chinese central government has introduced targeted poverty alleviation, aiming to achieve genuine outcomes by accurately identifying and assisting poverty-stricken households.

Summary: The study reveals that the multi-dimensional poverty index is higher in the south, north, and northwest of Guizhou, while the overall ecological environment quality is higher in the west and lower in the east. There is a high coupling degree between the ecological vulnerability index of poor villages and the multi-dimensional poverty index, mainly showing moderate coordination and basic coordination. The results indicate that economic development in the east and ecological restoration in the west should be given more attention in the process of poverty reduction in Guizhou Province.
