How to build disaster-resilient cities and societies for making people happy

Yoshiyasu Takefuji

Summary: The current disaster approaches and strategies have proven to be failurues in society's vulnerability to pandemics and natural disasters such as COVID-19. This paper examines conventional disaster governance regimes and discusses the potential for establishing a sustainable and resilient society. With a focus on disaster prevention, the paper emphasizes the need for updating current disaster strategies in order to minimize the impact and cost of such events and to improve people's well-being. Furthermore, the paper presents an assessment of COVID-19 policies in terms of their effectiveness in strengthening disaster prevention technology.

Experimental and CFD study of ventilation performance enhanced by roof window and mechanical ventilation system with different design strategies

Yi He et al.

Summary: This study investigated the ventilation efficiency enhanced by a roof window and a mechanical ventilation system in the first certified Active House building in China. The artificial and natural ventilation strategies were quantitatively evaluated and compared. Findings showed that both the mechanical ventilation system and the roof window system were significantly effective in improving ventilation efficiency. The roof window system was found to be 1.62 times more efficient than the mechanical ventilation system under specific conditions. The design of the roof window and openings on the door played a crucial role in promoting dominant airflow. The study also highlighted the importance of considering the geometry of indoor space, local climate conditions, and heating strategies in achieving holistic sustainable design.

Pedestrian level wind flow field of elevated tall buildings with dense tandem arrangement

Huanxiang Gao et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigates the effects of elevation on 4 types of building arrangements and 6 different aspect ratios (AR) of tall buildings through particle image velocimetry (PIV). The results show that elevation can significantly enhance pedestrian wind environment and reduce drag exerted on buildings to some extent.
