How the Malleability of Material Artefacts Contributes to Institutional Maintenance: The Guimard Metropolitan railway entrances, 1914-2000

Summary: This paper investigates how an institution can be maintained over a long period of time through adaptations to the material artefact which instantiates it. Based on a historical case study of the Guimard Metropolitan railway entrances, the authors develop a process model of institutional maintenance, illustrating how adaptations to the material form, meaning and location of an artefact allow an institution to be maintained over time. The study expands our understanding of long-term institutional maintenance and highlights the importance of the malleability of an artefact.

Addressing modern slavery in supply chains: an awareness-motivation-capability perspective

Summary: This study adopts the AMC framework to investigate the factors that explain the variation in firms’ efforts to address modern slavery in supply chains. The findings show that media coverage, slavery risks in supply chains, and corporate sustainability performance are related to these efforts. Additionally, financial performance is not associated with firms’ efforts to address modern slavery issues.

The institutional logic of the sustainable organisation: the case of a chocolate supply network

Summary: This study examines how institutional logics are determined in the action of sustainable organisation and how multiple stakeholders' perceptions of sustainability emerge into a dominant logic. The analysis of a supply chain network structure reveals the identification of socio-economic organising principles and the risks created by the dominance of economic logics. Powerful firms use network structures and relationships to define and diffuse their conceptualisation of sustainability, restricting competing logics.
