From patriarchy to partnership: Gender equality and household finance

Luigi Guiso et al.

Summary: We used the variation in household head gender across Italian cohorts and regions to measure gender norms in intra-household financial decision making. The results show that more egalitarian norms lead to increased household involvement in financial markets, equity holdings, asset diversification, and investment returns. This suggests that gender roles can have significant economic consequences. Additionally, we find that patriarchal norms started declining in the early 1990s due to a pension reform that made traditional roles too costly to maintain.
