Understanding advances and challenges of urban water security and sustainability in China based on water footprint dynamics

Binghua Gong et al.

Summary: The sustainability of China's cities is threatened by water scarcity caused by both quantity and quality issues. The water footprint can be measured from consumption or production perspectives. While the water footprint from the consumption perspective has been widely studied, the changes in water footprint from the production perspective in China's cities remain unclear. A large-scale decrease in urban water footprint from the production perspective has been observed, with significant reductions in drylands. The implementation of water pollution prevention policies has played a crucial role in these savings. However, the rapid growth of domestic and ecological blue water footprint caused by urbanization and urban greening poses a challenge to alleviating urban water scarcity in the future.

Spatiotemporal heterogeneity of urban and rural water scarcity and its influencing factors across the world

Yihua Dai et al.

Summary: Water scarcity is a growing problem globally, particularly in urban areas. The proportion of water-scarce population is high and varies across months in certain countries. Expansion of water-scarce areas is mainly caused by irrigation, domestic, and industrial water withdrawals. Effective water resources management is needed to address this issue.

A projects portfolio selection for water security addressing future increasing water demand and salinity intrusion in Zhuhai City, coastal China

Shenlin Li et al.

Summary: Water security is crucial for sustainable development, and water engineering projects are essential in regional development plans. This study evaluated alternative projects for a coastal city facing challenges of increasing water demand and salinity intrusion, providing recommendations for project portfolios based on various criteria. The proposed method combines one-vote veto and Analytic Hierarchy Process to assist local governments in decision-making for long-term water security projects, with potential for application in other regions.

Future global urban water scarcity and potential solutions

Chunyang He et al.

Summary: Urbanization and climate change are exacerbating global urban water scarcity, with the number of people affected projected to increase significantly by 2050, particularly in countries like India. Large cities and megacities will be most severely affected, and while infrastructure investment can help alleviate water scarcity, potential environmental trade-offs must be carefully considered.
