Epidemiology of floods in sub-Saharan Africa: a systematic review of health outcomes

Summary: The majority of studies in sub-Saharan Africa found that flood exposure increases the susceptibility to cholera, scabies, taeniasis, Rhodesian sleeping sickness, malaria, alphaviruses, and flaviviruses. However, research on the long-term health effects, particularly mental health, non-communicable diseases, and pregnancy, is lacking. Further studies are urgently needed to better understand the health risks associated with floods and inform public policies for prevention and reduction of flood-related health risks.

The flood reduction and water quality impacts of watershed-scale natural infrastructure implementation in North Carolina, USA

Summary: This study aims to identify suitable areas for natural infrastructure implementation to reduce flooding and simulate flood reduction and water quality impacts in the Neuse River Basin. The results show that substantial flow reduction can be achieved at the local scale, but the benefits decrease at the subwatershed scale. Wetlands and reforestation can significantly reduce nutrient and sediment load. Large-scale conversion to natural infrastructure is needed to provide flood reduction benefits at the watershed scale.

Flood exposure and psychological distress among Ghanaian adults in flood-prone settings

Summary: Urban floods have long-term implications for mental health, but this issue is often neglected in flood-related studies. This study investigated the psychological distress of adults exposed to floods in Ghana. The results showed a significant positive association between flood exposure and psychological distress, with age and sex also influencing the level of distress. These findings highlight the need for policy efforts and public health interventions to manage psychological distress, including selective flood reduction measures and ongoing public education.

Assessment and spatiotemporal analysis of global flood vulnerability in 2005-2020
