Personality (Dys)Function and General Instability

Whitney R. Ringwald et al.

Summary: Research shows that humans adapt to a dynamic environment while maintaining psychological equilibrium, and systems theories of personality suggest that generalized processes regulate stability by controlling a person's reactivity to different situations. Our study tested this hypothesis using ambulatory assessment and found that reactivity is strongly associated with stability and general personality pathology. These findings provide insight into how individuals fundamentally adapt to their environments and lay the groundwork for more practical models of human functioning.

Childhood Environmental Instability and Social-Emotional Outcomes in Emerging Adults

Sara Babad et al.

Summary: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have a negative impact on social-emotional functioning. This study explores the association between individual and cumulative ACEs and social-emotional outcomes in self-esteem, loneliness, and negotiation in intimate partner relationships. The findings suggest that emotional abuse, emotional neglect, and having a substance using family member are negatively associated with self-esteem, while emotional neglect and cumulative ACEs are positively associated with loneliness. Having an incarcerated family member is positively related to negotiation in intimate partner relationships.

Across the continuum: Associations between (fluctuations in) momentary self-esteem and psychotic experiences

Mary Rose Postma et al.

Summary: The study found that lower momentary self-esteem was associated with a greater intensity of psychotic experiences in all three groups. Variability in momentary self-esteem was associated with a greater intensity of psychotic experiences in ARMS and controls, while instability was only associated with psychotic experiences in controls. These findings suggest a reciprocal temporal association between self-esteem and psychotic experiences, highlighting the importance of self-esteem in addressing psychotic symptoms.

Childhood maltreatment is associated with distrust and negatively biased emotion processing

Johanna Hepp et al.

Summary: Higher levels of childhood maltreatment were associated with increased distrust and perceived threat, as well as more negative emotional ratings in individuals with higher levels of CM. The study suggests that even when a trauma-related disorder is not the main diagnosis, considering any level of CM as a potentially relevant treatment factor could have clinical implications.

The complex and dynamic interplay between self-esteem, belongingness and physical activity in daily life: An experience sampling study in adolescence and young adulthood

Victor Mazereel et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that physical activity predicts increases in self-esteem and belongingness, while belongingness predicts self-esteem. Self-esteem does not influence physical activity, and the relationships between physical activity, self-esteem, and belongingness are complex and fluctuating.

Levels and Instability of Daily Self-Esteem in Adolescents: Relations to Depressive and Anxious Symptoms

Fanny Mlawer et al.

Summary: The study found that daily self-esteem was negatively associated with depressive symptoms but not anxious symptoms in adolescents. Additionally, instability of daily self-esteem was positively related to depressive symptoms, whereas no significant relation was found with anxious symptoms. These differential findings may be linked to differences in the temporal orientation of depressive versus anxious symptoms.

Relationship of childhood maltreatment, exercise, and emotion regulation to self-esteem, PTSD, and depression symptoms among college students

Laura C. Fasciano et al.

Summary: The study found that college students with maltreatment histories experience negative impacts on their psychological functioning, but engaging in physical exercise can help improve psychological functioning. Emotion regulation difficulties are related to the prediction of psychological functioning. Specifically, there are correlations between maltreatment history and psychological functioning, as well as between physical exercise and psychological functioning, and emotion regulation difficulties impact the relationship between maltreatment history and psychological functioning.
