Lorenzo Caliendo et al.

Summary: This study constructed a multicountry dynamic general equilibrium model to examine the economic effects of the 2004 enlargement of the European Union. The findings suggest that changes in migration and trade policy had heterogeneous effects across skill groups, resulting in overall welfare gains. The research emphasizes the importance of trade in quantifying the welfare and migration effects of labor market integration.

Impact of COVID-19 and Nationwide Lockdowns on Vegetable Prices: Evidence from Wholesale Markets in ChinaJEL codes

Jianqing Ruan et al.

Summary: This study combines the time regression discontinuity design method and the difference-in-difference method to identify the causal effects of lockdown policies on Chinese cabbage prices. The results show that the lockdown caused a rapid surge in prices, with supply chain disruptions being the main driving factor. Prices quickly returned to normal levels after the lifting of lockdown measures.

African swine fever in China: Impacts, responses, and policy implications

Meilin Ma et al.

Summary: The study suggests that current subsidy policies in China for the hog industry may not be the most efficient way to reduce pork prices. Instead, shifting some subsidies to the chicken farming industry could potentially lower pork prices faster and at a lower cost, benefiting consumers, producers, and the government.

Price Transmission in Agricultural Markets

Stephan von Cramon-Taubadel et al.

Summary: Recent developments in the analysis of price transmission in agricultural markets have shown that the research on spatial market linkages has become more sophisticated with the use of increasingly nonlinear time-series models. Different transactions and storage costs, as well as production and marketing factors, define separate markets, and price relationships in the food chain are highly context specific. Improvements in marketing, information, and transportation technology have strengthened price links in the food system, but vertical coordination in the food chain has made these links less visible to outside observers, including researchers.
