China's outward foreign direct investment in the Belt and Road Initiative: What are the motives for Chinese firms to invest?

Jeffrey B. Nugent et al.

Summary: China's noninfrastructural outward foreign direct investment (FDI) to Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) countries has significantly increased in sectors characterized by overcapacity and pollution, with lower institutional quality BRI countries being more likely to receive such investments. This suggests that Chinese firms may be motivated to invest in BRI countries to alleviate China's own overcapacity and pollution issues. It is crucial for Chinese investors and host country governments to be aware of potential side-effects of FDI investments in order to sustain mutually beneficial effects of the BRI in the long term.
