Selected by the tide: Studying the specificities of a traditional fishing method in mangroves

Latifa Pelage et al.

Summary: Intertidal fishing using block nets in mangroves has been of socio-economic and cultural importance to tropical fishing communities. This study investigated the catch composition and selectivity of intertidal fishing in northeastern Brazil and found spatiotemporal variability in catches and an efficient selectivity pattern of block nets. The findings emphasize the need for an ecosystem approach to fisheries management in coastal areas.

Fisheries governance and associated health implications: Current perspectives from US commercial fishermen

Ja Sorensen et al.

Summary: This article discusses the perspectives of commercial fishermen on the fisheries governance process and how these perspectives impact their emotional health and willingness to engage in future fisheries management discussions. The study found that fisheries management decisions have an impact on work-related stress and the governance process is seen as an external factor that fishermen cannot control, which has severe consequences for their overall sense of well-being. Fishermen believe that their input is not valued or prioritized, which may threaten their future engagement in fisheries management discussions.

Andrea J. Reid et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the integration of Indigenous knowledge systems with Western scientific approaches in fisheries research and management, emphasizing the concept of Two-Eyed Seeing for knowledge coexistence and complementarity. Through case studies in Canadian aquatic and fisheries, the operationalization of Two-Eyed Seeing is explored, highlighting the importance of action and the potential for a plural coexistence of Indigenous knowledge systems and Western scientific insights.

Local ecological knowledge to assist conservation status assessments in data poor contexts: a case study with the threatened sharks of the Brazilian Northeast

Antoine O. H. C. Leduc et al.

Summary: The study conducted on shark species caught in Brazilian waters by interviewing fishermen from the Northeast found variations in the maximum length of sharks caught by different age groups and trends of decline in maximum length for some species. Local ecological knowledge provided support for conservation status listing in data-poor contexts by revealing discrepancies between national and global Red List assessments for some species.

Marine spatial planning and the risk of ocean grabbing in the tropical Atlantic

Betty Queffelec et al.

Summary: Ocean grabbing, where traditional users are pushed aside by new development activities, must be prevented to maintain social equity. In tropical Atlantic countries like Brazil and Senegal, examples of ocean grabbing already exist. Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP) could be an opportunity to prevent ocean grabbing, but also poses risks of increasing it. It requires caution to ensure equitable decisions and should take into account the specificities of the tropical Atlantic context.

Challenges in the management of small-scale marine fisheries conflicts in Ghana

Godfred A. Ameyaw et al.

Summary: Marine fisheries in Ghana provide important socio-economic benefits such as food, livelihoods, employment, income generation, and poverty reduction. However, small-scale fisheries face challenges like overfishing and user conflicts, threatening resource sustainability and social stability. Various types of conflicts, including environmental, gear use, and governance issues, have negative impacts on economic and social development in the country.

Using GIS fuzzy-set modelling to integrate social-ecological data to support overall resilience in marine protected area spatial planning: A case study

Mae M. Noble et al.

Summary: This study developed an innovative approach using fuzzy-set multi-criteria evaluations in GIS modelling to integrate ecological data with stakeholder information for understanding social and ecological assets overlap within Marine Protected Areas. The research also used Bayesian Belief Network analysis to assess the vulnerability of MPAs and predict the impact of climate change on sensitive habitats. Decision-making maps were created to assist decision-makers and the local community in designing MPAs that support long-term social-ecological resilience.

Predicting potential compliance of small-scale fishers in Brazil: The need to increase trust to achieve fisheries management goals

M. R. O. Silva et al.

Summary: The study found that younger fishers and those who had established trustworthy relationships with stakeholders were more inclined to comply with fisheries regulations, and compliance levels varied between different locations. When facing a moratorium, fishers tended to trust community actors over institutional actors and cited expected profitability and ease of capture as reasons for choosing replacement species.

Microplastic contamination in tropical fishes: An assessment of different feeding habits

Anne K. S. Justino et al.

Summary: This study explores the ingestion of microplastics by marine organisms in a tropical estuarine environment, revealing different contamination levels based on feeding strategies. Predators were found to be the most contaminated species, with fibers being the most common type of microplastics ingested. The high contamination levels in the estuarine complex pose potential risks to human health, as the microplastics likely accumulate in sediment and water.

Fishermen's perceptions and experiences toward the impact of climate change and anthropogenic activities on freshwater fish biodiversity in Cote d'Ivoire

Amien Isaac Amoutchi et al.

Summary: The study investigated the perception of climate change and anthropogenic activities impacting freshwater fish biodiversity among fishermen in Cote d'Ivoire. Findings showed that majority of fishermen were aware of climate change, observed decreases in precipitation and increases in temperature, as well as significant decrease in fish quantity, with climate change and anthropogenic activities identified as main reasons for this decline. Threatened fish species in Ivorian freshwater ecosystems were also listed by the fishermen.

Latifa Pelage et al.

Summary: The study found that all ontogenetic classes of the twelve selected species caught by northeast Brazil SSFs along an estuary-shelf break gradient were in line with a balanced harvest (BH) pattern. Most gears predominately caught young individuals and low trophic level species, suggesting that size limitations alone may not be sufficient to prevent overfishing.

Fishers perceptions of ecosystem service change associated with climate-disturbed coral reefs

Anna J. Woodhead et al.

Summary: The study found that fishers perceive noticeable changes in ecosystem services associated with coral reefs, including social, ecological, and behavioral dynamics. Perception of ecosystem service changes is influenced by factors such as fishers' diving/snorkeling experience, working from larger boats, education level, age, and number of livelihood alternatives in the family. Changes in ecosystem services are connected to fishers' subjective, relational, and material dimensions of well-being.
