Effects of Question Methods in Assessing Fear of Hate Crimes

Summary: This study compared episodic measures and standard methods in assessing the frequency and magnitude of perceived threat of hate crime. The study also examined the framing effects of question wording, with worry- and fear-based questions resulting in higher levels of perceived threat. Victim and third-party reporting of violent victimization to the police in incidents involving victims with disabilities

Summary: This study, using the National Crime Victimization Survey, examines the reporting of incidents to police by victims with disabilities compared to those without disabilities. The results show that incidents involving victims with cognitive disabilities are less likely to be reported by the victim. There were no significant differences in third-party reporting for the types of disabilities considered. Furthermore, Deaf/Blind victims and victims with physical disabilities were more likely to cite police ineffectiveness as a reason for not reporting.
