paper Knowing what matters: Short introductory texts support pre-service teachers' professional vision of tutoring interactions

Monika Martin et al.

Summary: This study examined the application of professional-vision skills in classroom situations. Through a 90-minute intervention with 85 biology pre-service teachers, it was found that the combination of knowledge acquisition and application improved students' ability to apply professional-vision skills. The intervention involved an introductory text followed by classroom video examples, and students who read about specific tutoring strategies made more references to pedagogical concepts in their analyses compared to those who read about generic video observational guidelines.

Professional knowledge and task instruction specificity as influencing factors of prospective teachers' professional vision

Ann-Sophie Grub et al.

Summary: The study found that the accuracy and speed of professional vision in prospective teachers depend on their level of knowledge, and that specific task instructions do not have a positive impact on improving professional vision. This emphasizes the importance of knowledge transfer during university education for prospective teachers.

Opening up the black box: Teacher competence, instructional quality, and students? learning progress

Sigrid Blomeke et al.

Summary: Existing research suggests inconsistent or weak predictive effects of teacher knowledge on student achievement. This study found that teachers' skills and instructional quality mediate the relationship between teacher knowledge and students' learning progress, rather than having a direct effect. These findings have important implications for the continuum model of teacher competence and future research.

Teachers' and students' perceptions of students' ability and importance value in math and reading: A latent difference score analysis of intra-individual cross-domain differences

Inga ten Hagen et al.

Summary: Informed by expectancy-value theory and dimensional comparison theory, this study examined cross-domain intra-individual differences in elementary teachers' and their students' ratings of students' ability and subjective importance of math and reading. The results revealed that students perceived greater intra-individual differences in their own math ability compared to reading ability, as compared to their teachers' perceptions. Similar findings were found in the ratings of students' valuing of math versus reading, suggesting different dimensional comparison processes for students' self-judgments vs. their teachers' judgments. Additionally, the perceptions of teachers and students were positively associated for ratings of students' ability but not for ratings of students' perceived importance. Furthermore, there was substantial variation in intra-individual differences across students, and students' gender and prior achievement in math and reading contributed to this variation.

Professional vision of teaching as a focus-specific or focus-integrated skill e Conceptual considerations and video-based assessment

Christina Gippert et al.

Summary: Teachers need to consider different foci such as classroom management and instructional support in their professional vision. However, in teacher education, these different foci are often taught separately, raising the question of whether the professional vision is focus-specific or focus-integrated. Therefore, the researchers developed a video-based assessment tool to concurrently assess student teachers' professional vision of classroom management and instructional support. The results showed that a focus-specific conceptualization of professional vision best fit the data.

Expanding on prior conceptualizations of teacher noticing

Elizabeth A. van Es et al.

Summary: Recent research highlights teacher noticing as a core element of teaching, while also posing new questions about this construct. This article introduces an expanded framework that emphasizes the importance of not only selecting specific instructional features to observe, but also disregarding less significant aspects of classroom interactions. It also suggests that adopting an inquiry stance towards observed phenomena is crucial for making inferences about them.
