The buying center concept as a milestone in industrial marketing: Review and research agenda

Pablo Cabanelas et al.

Summary: The buying center has been a central element in understanding organizational buying behavior, but there is a lack of a comprehensive framework in the marketing literature. This study aims to develop a rigorous conceptual model of the buying center, assess the current state of research, and identify future research opportunities. The findings from a systematic literature review show a decrease in publications since the late 2000s and a lack of recent research in top-tier marketing journals. The study proposes a three-layer model to understand the concept, including the stages of buying center deployment and the contextual factors that influence decision-making.

Assessment of industrial pre-determinants for territories with active product-service innovation ecosystems

Yancy Vaillant et al.

Summary: This paper empirically investigates the impact of existing manufacturing sector on the performance of PSI ecosystems in terms of manufacturing employment growth in 17 Spanish autonomous communities from 2006 to 2012. The findings reveal that territories with a strong incumbent manufacturing sector before developing PSI ecosystems experience greater industrial employment growth. This research has implications for scholars, managers, and policymakers.

A platform ecosystem view of servitization in manufacturing

Kawaljeet Kapoor et al.

Summary: This study investigates the changes and interactions of the social and technical subsystems of a platform ecosystem in the context of advanced services. The study finds that manufacturers' decisions affect the range of services they can offer, the complexity of service transformation poses a risk to the success of servitization, and manufacturers can operate across multiple structural boundaries simultaneously.

Paradoxes in servitization: A processual perspective*

Jekaterina Dmitrijeva et al.

Summary: Servitization is a paradoxical and lengthy transformation process in the manufacturing field, where manufacturers need to shift from product-based competition to service-based competition and find a balance between the two. This study, using longitudinal data from case studies, identifies the emergence and evolution of learning, belonging, organizing, and performing paradoxical tensions throughout the servitization journey.

Moving toward autonomous solutions: Exploring the spatial and temporal dimensions of business ecosystems

Thomas Frandsen et al.

Summary: This paper examines the impact of digital servitization on the offshore wind industry and explains the development of autonomous solutions using activity theory. The study finds that spatial-temporal expansion helps understand the development and co-evolution of business ecosystems, and that the development of epistemic objects relies on various mediating tools. Additionally, the findings provide practical insights for developing digital solutions and fostering closer collaboration.

Tensions in digital servitization through a paradox lens

Zsofia Toth et al.

Summary: This study investigates the tensions within and between organizations caused by the convergence of servitization and digitalization into digital servitization. By applying a paradox theory lens, the authors identify eight tensions related to organizing, learning, belonging, and performing. For practitioners in the field of digital services, this study suggests conducting an audit of these tensions to inform the formulation of mitigation strategies.

Explaining the servitization paradox: a configurational theory and a performance measurement framework

Saara A. Brax et al.

Summary: This study aims to develop a consistent and comprehensive measurement framework for servitization and its performance effects, and to use configurational analysis to reexamine previous evidence, leading to a configurational theory of the relationship between servitization and firm performance. The meta-analysis shows that the impact of servitization on performance depends on how firms implement servitization strategies and which performance aspects are examined, providing insights into the servitization paradox and shaping a configurational theory.

Reconciling and reconceptualising servitization research: drawing on modularity, platforms, ecosystems, risk and governance to develop mid-range theory

Mark Johnson et al.

Summary: This research bridges the disparate research on servitization, providing valuable insights for the field by reconciling different research streams and proposing a reconceptualised agenda. By identifying core themes such as modularity, platforms, ecosystems, risks, and governance, this study aims to advance thinking on servitization and propose a theoretical framework for future research. The paper considers similarities and differences between PSS and IS to develop a theory and establish linkages between core themes, ultimately aiming to bridge the servitization-related PSS and IS communities.
