Does democracy foster entrepreneurship?

Luca Fare et al.

Summary: This study provides the first empirical evidence that there is a direct link between democracy and entrepreneurship. By analyzing longitudinal data from 23 countries over a span of 1972 to 2010, it is found that democracy promotes entrepreneurial activity. The promotion of freedom, social interchange, and civil society participation in political processes are identified as key drivers of this positive effect. The study also highlights the sensitivity of entrepreneurship to both contemporaneous and historical levels of democratization.

Banking on the Confucian Clan: Why China Developed Financial Markets so Late

Zhiwu Chen et al.

Summary: For the past millennium, China has relied on the Confucian clan for interpersonal cooperation, neglecting the development of financial markets. This study shows that regions with stronger Confucian clans established fewer modern banks in the decades following the establishment of China's first modern bank in 1897. The findings also suggest that the clan continues to hinder China's financial development.

The Rise and Fall of Local Elections in China

Monica Martinez-Bravo et al.

Summary: The article suggests that autocrats introduce local elections when bureaucratic capacity is low, but limit the role of elected bodies as capacity increases to regain vertical control. The study finds that the introduction of elections improves popular policies and weakens unpopular ones, while increases in regional government resources lead to loss of village autonomy, especially in remote villages.

Democracy and Entrepreneurship

David B. Audretsch et al.

Summary: This article explores the relationship between entrepreneurship and democracy and illustrates their connection through historical and contemporary examples. It argues that both entrepreneurship and democracy are experiencing a decline, particularly exacerbated by the current Covid-19 crisis. The conclusion suggests that an important policy mandate for entrepreneurship is to ensure independent, decentralized, and autonomous decision-making.
