Psychosocial functioning as a personal resource promoting a milder course of schizophrenia

Summary: Low level of psychosocial functioning is associated with schizophrenia. Psychosocial functioning is related not only to current symptom severity, but also to future symptom severity. The study found that personal resources in the occupational domain and adequate interpersonal behavior have a positive impact on the long-term course of schizophrenia.

The findings suggest that broadly defined adversity and various forms of abuse can increase transdimensional severity, while neglect during childhood seems to be exclusively related to negative and depressive dimensions.
