Food waste in households: Children as quiet powerhouses

Monika Kansal et al.

Summary: This study explores parents' perceptions of how children influence household food generation in Australia, based on qualitative data collected from 15 focus groups of households from culturally diverse communities. The key findings indicate that children's pressure on parents leads to over-purchasing of supermarket promoted products, picky eating behaviors, and frequent changes in preferences. Parents also tend to over-prepare and over-provision food due to children's selective eating behaviors and preferences. The study also reveals that campaigns promoting imperfect shaped produce have limited effectiveness on children, who prefer perfect shaped fresh produce. Additionally, migrant communities face the challenge of balancing traditional food for adults with children's request for Australian foods. This research highlights the need for targeted interventions to change children's food behavior, with implications for policy and the involvement of parents, supermarkets, local councils, and government agencies in reducing food waste through redesigned marketing campaigns.
