Entrepreneurial Ecosystems and Economic Development Policy

Haifeng Qian et al.

Summary: The authors discuss economic development policy in relation to the growing field of entrepreneurial ecosystem research. They aim to answer four questions: How are entrepreneurial ecosystems different from regional innovation systems and clusters, which were previously popular among policy makers? What are the key findings in entrepreneurial ecosystem research that can inform policy making? How should economic development policy be adjusted under the entrepreneurial ecosystem approach? And what does the ongoing debate on the geographical boundaries of entrepreneurial ecosystems mean for policy making?

The impact of the covid-19 crisis on cooperatives and worker-owned firms in Spain in 2020: a sectorial shift-share analysis

Maite Cancelo et al.

Summary: On 11 March 2020, WHO declared COVID-19 as a pandemic, causing global economic effects. In Spain, a state of alarm was declared on 14 March to limit population mobility, resulting in the paralysis of the Spanish economy and a major economic crisis with employment implications. This study aims to test two hypotheses: first, whether employment destruction is less in Social Economy enterprises compared to capitalist economy enterprises; second, whether the crisis has different sectoral impacts on Social Economy enterprises. Through analysis of employment changes in registered companies, cooperatives, and worker-owned companies in the second quarter of 2020, the study finds a more resilient employment behavior in Spanish cooperatives and identifies sectoral differences in the impact of the crisis.
