An investigation of the perspectives of low-income Latina mothers with preschoolers transitioning to kindergarten

Sarai Coba-Rodriguez et al.

Summary: Research in the U.S. has found that young Latino children from families with demographic risk factors often lack the necessary literacy skills for a successful transition to kindergarten. Comparative studies have shown lower quality home environments and lower child outcome assessments among Latino children compared to their Black and White peers. However, qualitative studies focusing on Latino families reveal the positive ways that Latina mothers and other family members promote child literacy development, despite the risk factors. This study addresses gaps in the literature by exploring the in-home literacy practices of low-income Latina mothers and the role of other family members in promoting children's literacy development.

Vygotsky's theory in-play: early childhood education

Larry Smolucha et al.

Summary: Vygotsky argued that the highest levels of abstract thinking and self-regulation in preschool development are established through pretend play using object substitutions. His theory emphasizes the internalization of self-guiding speech and the assessment of child's learning ability by utilizing the assistance of a more knowledgeable person, known as the zone of proximal development. These concepts are crucial in understanding how consciously directed mental functions develop as neurological systems.
