Summary: The relationship between food insufficiency and binge eating in Black Americans is complex, and is influenced by sociodemographic factors. Ethnicity plays a role in determining the association between food insufficiency and obesity, with Afro-Caribbeans showing a stronger connection compared to African Americans. Food insufficiency was not significantly associated with recurrent binge eating after adjusting for socio-demographic factors.

Effectiveness of the Body Project Eating Disorder Prevention Program for Different Racial and Ethnic Groups and an Evaluation of the Potential Benefits of Ethnic Matching

Eric Stice et al.

Summary: This study examined the intervention effects of a dissonance-based eating disorder prevention program on racial and ethnic minority groups compared to White participants using data from two large U.S. samples. The results suggest that the Body Project produced similar effects for racial/ethnic minority groups relative to White participants, with potential larger effects for Hispanic participants. Additionally, there was no evidence that a better match between minority participants' race/ethnicity and fellow group members was associated with larger intervention effects.

A test of the tripartite influence model of disordered eating among men

Lauren M. Schaefer et al.

Summary: Studies of the Tripartite Influence Model conducted with female samples suggest that thinness-oriented pressures, internalization, and appearance comparisons may be risk factors for disordered eating. Limited work has investigated this model among men utilizing measures specifically designed to assess both muscularity- and thinness-oriented processes, which characterize male body image concerns. This study examined the Tripartite Influence Model of disordered eating among men using measures designed for both muscularity- and thinness-oriented appearance pressures, internalization, and appearance comparisons. The results indicated support for a version of the Tripartite Influence Model among men, where muscularity- and thinness-oriented pressures relate to disordered eating indirectly through pathways involving thin internalization, muscular internalization, and appearance comparisons. Further research is needed to see if the model applies to muscularity-oriented disordered eating.
