Expectations, end-of-life fears and end-of-life communication among palliative patients with cancer and caregivers: a cross-sectional study

Summary: Open communication with caregivers during serious illness is important for high-quality care. This study explores the differences in expectations, fears, and experiences of end-of-life communication between palliative cancer patients and their caregivers. The results showed that patients and caregivers desire patient autonomy and have generally positive expectations of end-of-life discussions. However, there is a self-other asymmetry, as patients and caregivers expect personal relief from discussing end-of-life issues while also expecting the other person to be burdened by such communication. Professionals need to take the initiative in initiating end-of-life communication.

Expectations in the Communication About Death and Dying: Development and Initial Validation of the End-of-Life Conversations - Expectations Scale

Summary: The present study developed and validated the End-of-Life Conversations - Expectations Scale (EOLC-E) to assess expectations related to death and dying communication. The scale consists of three dimensions: expected own emotional burden, expected other person's emotional burden, and communication self-efficacy. Results indicate that the scale is reliable and valid, and it can be used in communication research to optimize expectations and increase end-of-life communication.

Predictors of Coping with Health-related Expectation Violations among University Students

Summary: Individuals cope with expectation violations related to healthy food and physical activity by ignoring the discrepancy, increasing efforts to fulfill them, or changing their expectations. Valence, discrepancy magnitude, and controllability of the expectation disconfirming event predict coping strategies. Results show that better-than-expected events lead to higher assimilation, while worse-than-expected events lead to higher immunization. Individuals with control over the source of expectation disconfirmation show higher assimilation, while those without control show higher accommodation.

Young adults' perspectives on advance care planning: Evaluating the Death over Dinner initiative

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between death attitudes, experience, and perspectives on advance care planning (ACP) in young adulthood, as well as the impact of attending a Death over Dinner event on ACP perspectives. The results showed that higher death rejection and more experience with death predicted reservations about ACP. However, participation in a Death over Dinner event decreased reservations towards ACP compared to the control group. Therefore, Death over Dinner appears to be a useful intervention in improving attitudes towards ACP without diminishing individuals' sense of their remaining time to live.

Predictors of Coping With Expectation Violation: An Integrative Review
