Contrasting impacts of dry versus humid heat on US corn and soybean yields

Summary: The impact of extreme heat on crop yields is a pressing issue, but the mechanisms involved and their differences between dry and humid heat remain unclear. Using a regression model, it was found that while extreme dry heat reduced crop yields, humid heat had insignificant impacts and even boosted yields in some areas. This suggests that conflating dry and humid heat extremes may result in underestimated sensitivity of crop yields to extreme dry heat.

Summary: One of the major challenges of climate change is the increase in climate hazards and their impacts. The amplified impacts resulting from hazards occurring close to one another due to insufficient resilience of systems or increased severity of hazards are of special concern. This study projects changes in compounding hazards, showing that extreme heat events and consecutive extreme precipitation events are likely to increase in frequency, leading to an elevated risk of simultaneous crop failures in key regions.

Summary: This study for the first time uses empirical physiological observations to examine the widely-publicized theoretical limit of 35 degrees C wet-bulb temperature for human adaptability to extreme environments. It found that uncompensable heat stress in humid environments occurs at wet-bulb temperatures significantly lower than 35 degrees C in young, healthy adults. Additionally, the study shows that uncompensable heat stress occurs at widely different wet-bulb temperatures depending on ambient vapor pressure.

Summary: High-resolution satellite observations are essential for monitoring global progress towards Sustainable Development Goals. The study shows that global cropland area increased by 9% in the first two decades of the twenty-first century, while per-capita cropland area decreased by 10%. This was primarily due to agricultural expansion in Africa and South America, leading to conflicts with the goal of protecting terrestrial ecosystems. Despite a decrease in per-capita cropland area, per-capita annual cropland net primary production increased by 3.5% due to intensified agricultural land use.
